Why
Detoxify?
By Nancy Zivkovic, CNP
Detoxification
is the process of neutralizing and clearing toxins from the body.
It helps to expel excess mucus and congestion as a result of toxin
buildup from our food, water, environment and prescription use.
Internally, fats, cholesterol, free radicals, and other irritating
molecules act as toxins. Additionally, poor digestion, a sluggish
colon, impaired liver function, and poor elimination through the
kidneys, respiratory tract, and skin all add to increased toxicity.
A detoxification program involves dietary and lifestyle
changes that reduce the intake of toxins and improve elimination.
To minimize the toxin load, it is recommended to avoid refined food,
sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and chemical preservatives. Herbal
remedies, probiotics and enzymes enhance and support the detoxification
systems. During any cleanse, be sure to drink a minimum of 8 –
10 cups of purified water and increase your intake of fresh fruits
and vegetables for added fiber.
The best time to detoxify is to follow the seasonal
cycles. Autumn, beginning September 11th is an ideal time to begin
a low toxicity diet and cleansing program encouraging positive dietary
habits. Weight loss, slowing the aging process, rest for the organs,
rejuvenation, clearer skin, improved fertility, and enhancing the
senses are just some of the benefits of a detoxification program.
