Massage Therapy - Preventing Winter Falls
By Calais Irwin, RMT
We’ve all experienced the pain and aggravation of slipping
on ice. In fact in Ontario, over 18,000 injuries reported every
year are due to slips and falls and the average time away from work
is 6 weeks. Here are a few tips to help prevent you from suffering
a fall.
• Wear appropriate footwear! Leave the high heels and big
chunky soled shoes at home. Or bring them with you and change once
you’ve arrived safely. After all, those heels won’t
look so cute once you’ve stuffed your swollen foot into them.
• Make sure to salt or sand your walkway.
• Watch where you walk. Gloomy overcast days cause less contrast
in surfaces and make ice patches harder to see.
If you happen to be unfortunate enough to fall, ice any injuries
a.s.a.p. to help prevent swelling. And if you’re not feeling
better in a few days, it’s time to see your Massage Therapist
or Chiropractor for a proper assessment.
